It may still be winter outside, but it’s not too soon to start thinking and planning for summer. One of the best ways to bring light into your home and make it easy to get outside is to install some type of patio door.

Patio door options have come a long way over the years, and there are many styles to choose from. Whether you’re considering a replacement or a new install, you can find energy-efficient and attractive choices at Bavarian Window Works.

Here are some of our favourite different types of patio door options:

Sliding Patio Doors

Sliding patio doors are a popular style because of their ease of use and simple design. The doors slide along a track and overlap one another which allows them to function without taking up any extra space in the home.

These doors are typically made with vinyl because it is long-wearing and low maintenance — although they can be made with wood, aluminum, or steel.

Sliding glass doors are manufactured with high-grade glazings, argon gas filling, and spacers to increase insulation and reduce heat loss and solar gain.

Bi-fold Patio Doors

Bi-fold doors, or simply folding doors, add a fresh dimension to a patio door. The doors open onto themselves and fold out of the way, to allow for a larger opening without a lot of divided doorway spaces.

These doors are typically made with vinyl and feature metal-reinforced construction for durability.

Bi-fold glass doors are manufactured with full perimeter weatherstripping around the frame and sashes to allow for a tight seal and energy efficiency.

French Patio Doors

French patio doors, sometimes called hinged patio doors, are very much on-trend in 2017. The doors can open outwards or inwards and offer great ventilation and airflow.

These doors are typically made with fibreglass for durability and increased energy efficiency.

French patio doors are can be manufactured with a wood grain, for that classic and warm look, and are available as single doors or doubles, depending on your needs.

Lift-and-Slide Patio Doors

Lift-and-slide patio doors are a popular choice if you want to open up a larger area to the outdoors. Built into each system is a lever and wheel mechanism that allows the heavy glass doors to move easily. This mechanism is not visible allowing for a wide-open, clean-looking space.

These doors are typically made with wood or metal-clad wood and can be configured to any shape or size.

Lift-and-slide patio doors are manufactured with tempered, insulated glass, and can be installed with sills in a variety of options for increased insulation.

  1. Consider features before you make a final decision about your replacement windows. Many modern styles are designed to flip down and inward for easy cleaning, which can be a real advantage.
