Awning windows are a popular addition to any traditional or contemporary. They flood your space with natural light and open outward with just a turn of the hand. They are practical, easy to use, and a great option for your home.
Awning windows are flexible enough to be installed in a variety of locations and in combination with other window styles. They work equally well placed high or low on the wall, and they can be easily grouped together. If you need a functional window, awning windows look great, offer excellent ventilation and can work well in almost any situation. For professional installation and superior craftsmanship, select Bavarian Windows for your next awning windows project.
How to Operate an Awning Window
Awning windows are hinged at the top and swing outward for good ventilation while keeping wind and rain out. There is a lock on both sides of the window. Flip the locks up to disengage them from the sash and then lift the crank on the bottom of the window and rotate it in a clockwise fashion to open the window. The more you rotate it, the more air will flow into your home or business.
To close the window, perform the opposite maneuvers. Turn the crank in a counter-clockwise rotation, then flip the locks down to secure the window in place. When using the crank you don’t need to secure it until it is as tight as possible. This will cause unnecessary pressure on the crank. Stop turning the crank when the window is gently closed. Your locks on the sash will ensure a secure and durable fastening and completely watertight fit.
Awning Window Benefits
Awning windows are a good option for most homes or offices. They are often used in kitchens and bathrooms but can be used in any room you want to experience the following benefits:
- Good Ventilation: The unique design of awning windows provides optimal airflow. They are particularly well suited to very windy areas since the “awning” will block the wind from blowing in through your home.
- Weatherproof: Awning windows will prevent water from entering your home and can be opened even in inclement weather. Their unique design keeps rain out of your home, so you can enjoy fresh air and maximum ventilation even during a light downpour.
- Versatile: You can choose from horizontal or vertical awning windows, different colours, trim, and other custom options for your sealed glass unit. Whether you want vinyl windows or units with outstanding insulation, they can be custom-designed to suit your needs.
- Aesthetically Pleasing: Awning windows are a stylish addition to both traditional and contemporary homes. They offer clean lines and a minimalistic design.
- Privacy: The awning style design provides ventilation while reflecting light off of your windows. For additional privacy choose tinted glass for your awning windows.
- Ease of Use: Awning-style windows are easy to open and shut. The opening mechanism is controlled by a simple hand crank.
- Unobstructed Views and Natural Light: Unless added for aesthetic reasons, awning windows do not have any meeting sashes or rails. This means that they offer unobstructed views of the outdoors and plenty of natural light.
- Egress Windows: Some sizes of awning windows can be used to meet egress code requirements. Learn more about your city’s egress requirements here.
- Energy-Efficient Windows: There is a wide range of energy-efficient models to choose from. They provide a tight seal on their own but energy-efficiency can be increased by adding dual pane or low-e glass.
Types of Awning Windows in Canada
Awning windows typically have a sash across the top of the window and open outward like an “awning”. It is how the windows got their name. The most popular type of awning window is a horizontal awning window. This is where the width of the window is wider than the height. However, you can also get vertical awning windows. These open the same way as their horizontal counterparts but the height of the window is taller than the width.
Awning windows are often confused with casement or hopper windows. The difference between awning and hopper window styles are the direction that the window swings. Awning windows open outwards, whereas hopper-style windows open inwards.
Hopper-style windows enjoy many of the same benefits. However, awning windows tend to be preferred, since they protect against the elements and do not require a clearance area inside your home like hopper windows do.
Casement windows use a crank and locking system similar to awning windows but they are hung on the side and swing outwards like a door. Casement windows can let more air in than an awning window but don’t provide the same level of weather resistance.
Where to Add Awning Windows in Your Home?
Awning windows are extremely versatile. Since they can be installed high up on walls they are practical for areas of your home where you need more privacy or security. For example, bathrooms and bedrooms would be an ideal place for awning windows because they could be installed high on the wall for privacy and ventilation.
They are also practical in children’s rooms. Placed high up on the wall they can offer light and ventilation but would be too high for little ones to open on their own. Other types of windows are typically locked as a safety measure and therefore unusable in children’s nurseries.
Another popular place for awning windows is kitchens. Maybe people choose to place them above their sinks or other easy to reach areas. Their ease of use and weather-resistant design means they can be easily opened after cooking or to air out the humidity in your space.
Awning windows also work on top of each other or with other window styles, especially statement pieces like bay, bow or picture windows. They can be configured to offer ventilation alongside windows that offer an unobstructed view.

At Bavarian, our ultimate goal is to ensure that your windows reflect your personal taste and lifestyle and that you’ll still love them many years down the road. Our team will provide you with the most up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and products to help you choose your windows. At our showroom, we’ll work with you to navigate through our wide selection of options including appropriate colour and hardware selections for your home.
Once you’ve chosen your desired windows, an experienced window and door expert will come to your home to take measurements, answer your questions, and ensure that they have everything they need to order all the necessary products.
Our standard has always been to use only finger joint pine during the installation process. We don’t use MDF, (medium-density fibreboard), which is lower quality and is often manufactured with formaldehyde. In addition, we use only WURTH insulation and glass cleaner, because of their high-quality European product standards. Finally, we will caulk all the inside trim after installation so that it’s ready for paint.
After your project is complete, we will conduct a thorough clean up of our work area. This includes using glass cleaner on all your windows and vacuuming and dusting to remove any remaining sawdust. Our commitment is that we leave your home the way it was when we arrived — or better. At the end of every project, our experienced technician will follow a Final Inspection Checklist and inspect all of your windows to ensure that everything is perfect and level.
We’ll also take the necessary time to show you how to operate your windows to ensure that everything opens and closes smoothly and that you feel comfortable using your new windows.
If you have any questions about the process, or if you’d like to request a quote, you can contact Bavarian Window Works here and a member of our team will be happy to help.
